Understanding the Layered Approach within C-UAS

In a time where drones proliferate with rapid technological advancements, the need for robust counter-unmanned aerial systems (CUAS) solutions has never been greater. To enhance security and be at the forefront of technology, MyDefence focuses on a layered approach to CUAS equipment. This ensures comprehensive protection and security across environments and on the battlefield. The layered approach strategy is not only about neutralizing drone threats but creating a resilient ecosystem capable of adapting to evolving challenges – wherever they are.

What is A Layered Approach?

The layered approach in CUAS involves integrating multiple layers of detection, identification, and mitigation technologies. This multi-layered strategy allows us to address threats at various stages, ensuring safety and the ability to stay ahead at every stage. By deploying a combination of radar, radio frequency (RF) sensors, electro-optical (EO) cameras, acoustic sensors and jamming capabilities, MyDefence creates a robust, multi-layered system that ensures faster and more precise responses to drone threats.

Detection: The First Line of Defence

Detection is the cornerstone of our layered approach. Accurate and timely detection of UAS is crucial to initiating an effective response. At MyDefence, we employ advanced RF systems capable of detecting UAS at long ranges and in challenging conditions. Our solutions provide reliable early-warning drone detection. With continuous scans for drone control and video signals, it enables threat detection frequently, often before the drone leaves the ground. Our RF technology is complemented by radar sensors that monitor the spectrum for UAS control signals, offering an additional layer of detection with the RF and radar detections complimenting each other, enabling detection of UAS that may be invisible to a specific sensor.

Identification of Potential Threats

Once a potential threat is detected, the next step is identification. Differentiating between legitimate and malicious drones is essential to avoid unnecessary disruptions of operations, with legitimate drones identified via MyDefence sensors using Remote ID. We are seeing a growing challenge posed by the misuse, or unintended use, of drone technology. Electro-optical and infrared cameras enhance visual confirmation and identification, ensuring threats can be monitored and tracked effectively in both day and night conditions. This visual confirmation, combined with RF signal analysis, ensures accurate identification of both the drone and the pilot. Being able to identify potential threats is essential to understand the airspace above us, protect critical infrastructure and save lives.

Mitigation: Neutralizing the Threat

The final layer of the approach is mitigation. Our CUAS equipment includes non-kinetic jamming technologies that disrupt unauthorized drones at long distances. It breaks the communication link between the UAS and its operator, rendering the drone inoperative. Our jammers are compact and effective, designed to neutralize drone threats quickly and effectively. It integrates seamlessly into operations, either functioning autonomously or under manual control, to disrupt malicious drone activity the moment it is detected.

Advantages of the Layered Approach

Our layered approach offers several distinct advantages over traditional single-layer defenses, working together:

  • Multiple detection and identification layers ensure that you detect UAS regardless of whether it is emitting RF, flying on AI or fibre-optic cables.
  • A layered structure allows integration with various technologies, thus providing the best of all worlds
  • Added layers of security, reducing false positives when it matters the most
  • Providing real-time situational awareness capabilities, ensuring coordinated responses and informed decision-making across units…
  • Seamless integration with existing military systems, including full compatibility with the Tactical Assault Kit (TAK), Sapient and FAAD C2 for enhanced operational efficiency and coordination.
  • MyDefence has integrated numerous cameras, radars, GPS spoofers and acoustic sensors and provides an open API for further open integration

A layered approach helps safeguard military installations, public events, critical infrastructure and other sectors against espionage, potential dropping of contraband and potential attacks. This approach provides additional security for various operations and their personnel. Staying vigilant is crucial to stay ahead of ongoing advancements of drone technology. We ensure our solutions provide the most advanced and reliable CUAS protection available. Further focusing on collaboration and partnerships in the industry will be key to advancing and innovating in CUAS technology.

“There is not CUAS silver bullet; no single detector/mitigator that handles the ever evolving UAS threats. Therefore, a layered approach is required, with detectors and mitigators complimenting each other for comprehensive CUAS.” – Jan D. Johansson, CTO, MyDefence A/S

By embracing the layered approach, we can create a safer and more secure future together.
